Born in India and raised in Tokyo, we are a brown mother and daughter team who love to read, write, and tell stories. For the first decade of my life in Tokyo, I taught at universities across the city, and for the next decade, I baked brownies, made fairy gardens, debated feminism, discussed goblins, and pondered whether Indian dragons prefer mangoes over marshmallows.
“Brown Boss Babe” grew out of the experience of my second-generation immigrant daughter raising me, a first-generation immigrant mother in a culture that is equally foreign to the both of us. It grew out of her passion and an insatiable appetite for narratives of resilience and power. “Brown Boss Babe” are her questions and her own attempts to arrive at answers that empower her and so many little girls out there. This is her quest to understand the power a brown boss babe yields. In her quest for stories of empowered brown women, we explore the strength they nurture and the the countless ways they are not only reshaping narratives but also transcending them by writing their own.
